MONROE WA – The Northwest Sprint Tour kicked off its 2025 season last night Evergreen Speedway for the inaugural Granite Construction Can/Am Shootout.
18 cars signed in at the start of the weekend, with Tony Offitt and Marty Rossler both having issues before heat races, with 16 cars starting the main event.
In qualifying Jeff Montgomery Racing “The Hurricane” blistered the 3/8ths oval with a new track record of 12.715, beating Aaron Willison’s former track record set back in 2019 at a 12.775.
Willie Ginn nabbed the first heat race of the night in his first appearance at Evergreen Speedway and first start with the NST. Series veteran and 2021 NSRA champion Randy DuBois brought home the second heat race win.
With a 10 car inversion for the 50 lap main event quick qualifier Montgomery would start on the outside of row five alongside of Aaron Willison, with Tom Weston and Cody Ridge leading the field to the green flag. Weston would jump out to the early lead and show the way for the first 11 laps until Ron Larson would lose a wheel coming off of turn two to bring out the first yellow.
On the restart Aaron Willison would try a three wide move on Weston and his brother Ryan that ended with the 14 car hopping a wheel and breaking the left front shock. Randy DuBois and Chloe Hudson would also be involved in the incident that would bring out the red flag. On the ensuing restart Ryan Willison would be able to get around Weston and assume command of the field. While leading on lap 23 Willison would become the second driver to lose the left rear tire, sending the 41 spinning off into the grass in turn three.
Brad Aumen would inherit the race lead and stayed out front until another yellow for Ron Larson and Stewart Lee would come out just a few laps later. On the restart Aumen would be challenged by Aaron Willison, who charged from the tail of the field after repairing the Rendle Willison 14. The two drivers would battle side by side for two laps before banging wheels multiple times, the last time ending with Willison in the tire wall and Aumen spun in the turn four grass.
After a red flag for a fuel stop and with the impending Evergreen Speedway curfew the race turned into a 12 lap shootout with Evan Margeson inheriting the lead. Margeson sprinted away from Jeff Montgomery on the restart, with the 33J closing to within a car length of the RZ 57 at the stripe, but Margeson had just enough to hold on and score the $7500 payday and the inaugural Granite Can/Am Shootout win!
